Discovery of Lost Worlds

Findings of the new, scientific archaeology do not generally contradict the conclusions of the pioneers, although they may refine the dating. It is still true that the first civilizations, marked by cities, governments, armies, laws, religion, and writing, arose in the Mesopotamian Valley between three and four thousand B.C. and at the same time or almost as soon (though without cities) in Egypt. It is during that magic millennium that the comprehensible record of civilized man begins. The discovery of selected chapters of that record is the subject of this book.
