The synagogue can only be fitted into the scheme of things if somethingis known about its history and functions. This book is intended to helpachieve that aim. It presents a brief, clear and straightforward picture in the hope that it will whet the reader's appetite to go further. To that purpose, a bibliography is appended as is a list of the main sources referred to in the text. If that hope is realized, this book will have its purpose well.
