Written for seminary students and religious professionals, Streeter treats spirituality as a field of study. She investigates spiritual experience in an interdisciplinary way, attentive to the human person in a way that has often been neglected in the past. Her premise is that every person is called to holiness. Holiness comes through the relationship of the human with the Divine, relating through physical, psychic, and spiritual responses. Streeter's study is both explanatory and descriptive, an exploration into how the Divine interacts with the human in the process of soul-making. She begins with the human, exploring the human as organism, psyche, and spirit and establishing an anthropological framework for grounding religious experience in human consciousness. Streeter then turns her attention to how the Divine has been perceived throughout history, the Divine in relation with the human as Christ Jesus, and both the functionality of grace and its theological virtue.
