Ecology 2000

In the early 70's, 'ecology' was a buzz word. A positive torrent of best sellers assured us all that we were racing at breakneck speed to eco-catastrophe, and that by the 80's we would all be starving or suffocated by our own wastes. What went wrong? Or, to put it more accurately, what went right? Did the world's problems just go away in the intervening period? Of course not, but the difference is that we know a lot more now than we did in the late 1960's and other may even be a greater chance that we can act positively. Population growth rates are slackening spectacularly everywhere except Africa. On the other hand, we are more conscious of the crises being caused by acid rain, deforestation, desertification and carbon dioxide build-up than we were a decade ago.
