Description:
Petersen Galleries [Published Date: 1981]. Hardcover Bound by DeRu's Fine Art, 124 pp. Includes a brief bio of each artist, including a black and white photo of the artist and one or more reproductions of the artist's work (most in color). Text by Jean Stern. [From Preface by Robert Petersen of Petersen Galleries] This exhibition marks the first time that we have devoted our entire gallery space to a comprehensive collection of rare and important Western paintings. Our present collection of Western paintings is one which I feel will not easily be matched by a commercial art gallery in the near future, if ever at all. It comprises major works by most of the important Western artists: Frederic Remington, Charles M. Russell, Frank Tenney Johnson, Henry F. Farny, William R. Leigh, Oscar Berninghaus and Thomas Hill. In addition, we have included works by little known, yet excellent and potentially important artists, such as Kathryn Leighton and George Brandriff. This is the first major exhibition to feature works by important regional artists: Sydney Laurence of Alaska, Richard Lorenz of Milwaukee and J. Bond Francisco of Los Angeles. Lastly, we round-out the collection with works by E. I. Couse, Albert Bierstadt, E. S. Paxson, Olaf Seltzer, and the Dean of Western Artists Olaf Wieghorst, who is the only living artist included in this exhibition.
