Paving Alaska's Trails

Describes and analyzes the creation, development, and activities of the Alaska Road Commission (1905ó1956), a unique federal agency specifically founded to build Alaska's transportation network. In 27 years the Commission established 10,000 miles of roads and highways, and evolved from a small staff of 12 into a well-organized department of over a hundred people.
