Great Lakes Indian Art
Description:
In 1981, the Detroit Institute of Arts acquired one of the world's premier collections of North American Indian art. The Chandler/Pohrt collection of Native American art includes costumes, ornaments, decorative arts, antler carvings, and carved wooden bowls and utensils. The essays in this volume were inspired by the 750 objects which compose the collection. Addressing art historical and anthropological questions, the contributors interpret imagery found in Native American religious thought and representational art, examine material culture, and document European-American and Native American trade of artifacts.
