Conceptual Foundations of Occupational Therapy

Frustrated that the conceptual basis of occupational therapy often just seems to be based on ad hoc borrowings from other fields, Keilhofner (occupational therapy, U. of Illinois at Chicago) seeks to place the nature and practice of occupational therapy into a coherent framework based on its own terms. He proposes a model of knowledge organization in occupational therapy consisting of three concentric layers: the paradigm, the conceptual practice layer, and related knowledge not unique to occupational therapy. Each of these is examined in turn, with the comparative discussion of the field's current conceptual practice models occupying a central place in the discussion.
