Leo Eloesser, M. D.: Eulogy for a Free Spirit

This volume records the life and contributions of a renowned San Francisco surgeon who dedicated himself to freeing others from poverty, pain and oppression. He carried his mission worldwide in a life which spanned nearly a century. It led him into World War I, to fighting with the Loyalists in Spain, and to spending five years in war-torn China in the 1940's. Dr Eloesser's zest for his profession, his love of music and devotion to art, literature, exploration, and adventure, along with his compassionate concern for his fellow man, made him friends everywhere, among the famous and the downtrodden alike. His concern for the welfare of the welfare of the rural poor led him to make innovations in the rapid training of public health workers, midwives, and sanitarians, which have proven useful in the currently successful health care system in the People's Republic of China and have led to advances in both Mexico and Latin America.
