The practice of mumming or "janneying" is a world-wide phenomenon connected with religion, ritual and drama. Derived from the British and Irish customs now almost extinct, the Newfoundland mumming tradition, which is still a vital part of the island's culture, offers a unique opportunity for observing the practice.
