The Letters to the Seven Churches

Originally published in 1904 by Hodder and Stoughton, London. This exhaustive resource of historical background is slanted primarily to 'the minister who wants to enrich his background for a series of sermons on the letters to the seven churches.' Interest in the work, however, should not be confined to ministers, but will extend to anyone who wishes to engage in a serious study of the first three chapters of Revelation. Also, the information contained in this book is valuable from a historical viewpoint in the study of much of the New Testament, particularly the Book of Acts and the Pauline Epistles. The thirty-one chapters probably present the most extensive treatment every written on this short section of the Bible. The author deals with 'The Symbolism of the Seven Letters,' 'The Education of St. John in Patmos,' 'The Flavian Persecution in the Province of Asia as Depicted in the Apocalypse,' and each of the seven of the letters individually. Contains 36 illustrations, including black-and-white maps and drawings Sir William Mitchell Ramsay (1851-1939), classical scholar and archaeologist, is acknowledged as an outstanding authority on the life of Saint Paul and the history of the early church. Ramsay was professor of humanity at Aberdeen. During his career, he extensively explored sites in western Turkey.
