Description:

It is the purpose of this study to introduce the non-specialist to some of the significant discoveries made at Ras Shamra since the accidental discovery of the site in 1928. Particular attention is placed on three major epics which are named for heroes whose exploits were commemorated by the ancient inhabitants of Ras Shamra, then known as Ugarit. The poem known to us as the Aqhat Epic was earlier given the name Danel (the transliteration from Ugaritic of the name known to us as Daniel) and the Baal Epic was earlier named Anat for the sister of the god whose name it now bears. The third epic bears the name of Keret. This volume in the "Baker Studies in Biblical Archaeology" series is an account of the discovery of these tablets, life in Ras Shamra, and the significance of the tablets.
