Excerpt from The Life of Percy Bysshe ShelleyMy dear Alfred, - My earliest recollections are of digging on the sands at Teignmouth, between the sea and those red cliffs now bastioned by Brunel's long seawall, and of gathering wild convolvuluses at the foot of the cliffs before the railway was there. I was little more than a year and a half old then; and my guide, philosopher, and friend was my elder brother, you, some three years and a half old. It has been a less joyful digging and flower-culling, on a shiftier and more uncertain strand, this in which you have been helping me round about the footings of Tom Medwin's Life of Shelley. Still I have enjoyed it; and I believe you have.
