Schleiermacher's Early Lectures on Hermeneutics (Schleiermacher Studies and Translations)
Description:
At an international Schleiermacher congress in Berlin in 1984, Wolfgang Virmond announced that he had discovered amongst the effects of one of Schleiermacher's students a transcription of Schleiermacher's long-lost lecture notes on hermeneutics delivered in 1809/10 under the title "General Hermeneutics". The notes had actually been lost by Schleiermacher himself, forcing him to write a new set of lectures when he taught hermeneutics again in 1819. Virmond also announced at the same meeting that he had reconstructed the bulk of Schleiermacher's first set of lectures on hermeneutics, delivered at Halle in 1805, entitled simply "First Draft". This book offers an English translation of the "General Hermeneutics" and a translation of the 1805 "First Draft" following Virmond's reconstruction.
