Archimandrite Makarii Glukharev: Founder of the Altai Mission (Studies in Russian History)

Originally published in Russian in 1905, this sketch of the recently canonized Archimandrite Makarii (1792-1847) was written by a researcher who reveals great admiration for his subject as a highly motivated, devout, and dedicated advocate for the spiritual growth and geographical expansion of the Russian Orthodox church; he was also honest in pointing out less admirable facets of Makarii's personality and aspects of his unconventional behavior that some people found highly offensive.
