Art of the Southwest 2020 Wall Calendar

A popular subject for painters, the wide open spaces and desert landscapes of the American Southwest appear here in artwork that spans more than one hundred years, from early artists such as Henry Cheever Pratt to Victor Higgins and Maynard Dixon painting in the 1940s. These works reflect the ever-present sun and sense of history that pervades the region. Thomas Moran made a name for himself by capturing the power and grandeur of canyons in the West, particularly in Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon. His Zoroaster Temple at Sunset (on this calendar’s front cover), painted when he was almost eighty, features one of the most dramatic formations in the Grand Canyon. Native culture and architecture also play a role in the artistic vision of the land.
