African American Art 2020 Calendar
Description:
"In widely varied artistic styles, the works in this calendar survey key moments in African American art. The oldest painting here, created prior to the Civil War, lacks any hint of the artist's identity, existing within the formal traditions of the era. With the early twentieth century came a transformation: the Harlem Renaissance, a movement whose art bursts with powerful expressions of African American life. Artists raised in this cultural moment went on to create a wealth of socially conscious works in the decades that followed. Though some artists worked outside this arc—either self-taught or decidedly apart—new narrative works affirmed the role of African American art as valuable commentary, a cornerstone of resistance, and a celebration of black heritage. The works in this calendar are in the collection of the National Gallery of Art, Washington. All of Pomegranate's calendars are printed with soy-based inks on FSC certified paper, which means the paper has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council and manufactured by an FSC certified printer. FSC certification promotes responsible forest management by ensuring that forestry practices are environmentally responsible, socially equitable, and economically viable. FSC license code FSC N001864."
