The authors began working on this book after leaving the NSC, where, as dir. & sr. dir. for counter-terrorism, they watched the rise of al-Qaeda & helped coordinate America s fight against Usama bin Laden & his org. Warning about the appearance of a new breed of terrorists who were determined to kill on the grand scale, the authors began this book more than a year before 9/11, to sound the alarm for a nation that had not recognized the gravest threat of our time. After that day, they added a 2nd goal to their book: to understand how America let its defenses down, how warnings went unheeded, & how key parts of the gov't. failed at vital tasks. Describes the road ahead, where the terrorists will look to draw strength, & what the U.S. must do to stop them.
