For centuries flags have been an important means of demonstrating identities & allegiances, whether feudal, political, religious or national. This volume brings together over 200 flags from around the world, including national, organizational, international & provincial flags. Each flag is illustrated in full color. The book includes a detailed breakdown of the development of each flag, together with its symbolism. It also contains an introduction to the history, types & significance of flags in both a historical & contemporary context. The designs of most modern flags originated in the Middle Ages & were derived from the heraldry of kings & lords. Some of these coats of arms appear on many flags, although in simplified forms.
