Robert Amiss is not entirely happy at his job at the newspaper - the atmosphere is poisoned with egocentricity. When Joe Walden, features editor, is found drowned in a bowl of punch, suspicions of foul play are brushed aside by the police, that is until another death, that of Bragg, the editor.
