In Jim Brady, Susan Cummings has found the perfect man - tall, good-looking, decent and caring. Love never runs smooth, however, especially in 1950s Belfast, for Jim is a Catholic and Susan knows her Protestant parents will never accept such a union. Breaking up with Jim, Susan has a brief affair with her sister's boyfriend, Graham Robson, and when she discovers she is pregnant, she flees to England.
