When Verna Hume is found strangled in her bedroom, Detective Inspector Peach is given the case by Superintendent Tucker who makes it clear he considers this an open and shut case, with the woman's husband clearly in the frame. DI Peach isn't convinced and once he meets the mild-mannered Martin Hume, he knows his reservations were justified.
