Prehistoric Flint Mines (Shire Archaeology)

The working of flint is one of the oldest human industries. Flint was mined during the late fourth and third millennia BC by the first farming communities in Britain, before the use of metal for producing tools and weapons became widespread. This book describes the flint-mining excavation sites surviving today in Southern Britain, and outlines the history of archeologicaal research at these sites. The nature and significance of flint mines to the communities who built and used them also is discussed.
