Published in the Year of Industrial Heritage, this is an illustrated study of industrialization and its physical remains in Britain, the first country to be transformed in the wave which was to sweep across Europe and then the world. The book describes how the process affected the nation's whole culture, and contains extensive references to surviving sites and structures - monuments to men who pioneered industry and technology in the 18th and 19th centuries. These sites and structures are shown in photographs, diagrams and engravings, and pinpointed in maps and a gazetteer.
