In her second book on the knitting of the Shetland Islands, the author not only gives an account of the history of the art, but also describes in detail all the stitch patterns and techniques involved in making a garment, with notes on dressing and stretching, basic construction of shawls and scarves, adapting patterns and obtaining materials. Full instructions are provided for seven projects in different stitches and weights of yarn. These include shawls, scarves, a baby's shawl and a christening dress - all destined to become heirlooms of the future. In addition, the 'Samples' section contains instructions for making sample sqaures of over 30 stitch patterns of such intriguing names as 'print o' the wave', 'Madeira cascade', 'peerie flea' and 'roselace.' These can, if the knitter chooses, be substituted for the stitches given int he garment patterns. Detailed photographs illustrate the instructions for each sample square and each garment and further photographs show fine examples of antique knitted lace. 120 pages, 2 line diagrams, and over 40 photographs in black and white.
