F.E. Smith, First Earl of Birkenhead

After a successful career at the Liverpool Bar, F.E. Smith entered the House of Commons in 1906. For the next 20 years he engaged in some bitter political battles, but ultimately gave up hope of leading the Tory party after negotiating the 1921 Treaty with Sinn Fein.
