This work describes and indexes 1500 accessions made by the Department of Manuscripts of the British Library. Among the medieval manuscripts described are the tenth-century "Benedictional of St Athelwold", the "De Brailes Hours" and the "Hours of Elizabeth the Queen" from the Dyson Perrin collection. Among politicians' papers are those of three prime ministers: Spencer Percival, A.J. Balfour and Sir Henry Campbell-Bannerman. other notable acquisitions include the "Haig Memorandum", Earl Jellicoe's papers, letters of David Livingstone and Gordon of Khartoum and Captain Scott's diaries of his last ill-fated expedition to the South Pole. Among many prominent literary manuscripts are William Blake's notebook, Coleridge's "Kubla Khan", Oscar Wilde's "De Profundis", and autograph drafts for James Joyce's "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" and "Ulysses". Music is represented by the scores of 20th century British composers such as Elgar, Vaughan Williams and Bax, and by Dohnanyi and Percy Grainger.
