LARGE TYPE. When Lally Fletcher left 18th Century Norfolk for India, she was confident and inexperienced, naive and reckless. By the time she returned to England, she was penniless, widowed, homeless and defeated. Defeated by the darkness of a past half-remembered in her dreams, and wholly recalled in every waking memory of the nightmare she had endured in India.
