A history and celebration of rose gardens from the earliest times thorugh the late 18th century when the Empress Josephine created the first garden made exclusively for roses at Malmaison near Paris and on to gardens of the present day in Euope, the USA, Australia and New Zealand, the author charts the changing fashions which determine how roses are used by gardeners and suggests ideas for formal and informal designs. Jane Fearnley-Whittingstall is a garden designer and consultant who has won three wards for gardens at the Cheleas Flower Show.
