It chronicles landmark events that shaped the lives of the people who first inhabited the Americas and includes quotations of significance to Native America, as well as phases of the moon identified by their traditional tribal names. Each week is illustrated with a treasure of American Indian art. Selected to give the reader an overall view of the culture from prehistoric to contemporary times, the works reflect the diverse art made in the United States, Canada, and Alaska. A contemporary tribal map is included for reference. Phil Bellfy is a Crane Clan member of the White Earth Band of Minnesota Chippewa. He holds a bachelor's degree in psychology and a master's degree in sociology. Judith Depre is a curator and arts consultant who has developed numerous projects to increase enjoyment and understanding of the visual world.
