Description:

This is a one-of-a-kind source book on drug prevention for schools, parents, and communities. First, the major drugs and effects are discussed, along with the addiction cycle. Then, solutions are discussed from the standpoint of the school, family, and community. Aftercare activities are presented to prevent relapse. At the end of the book, various programs and resources are outlined. The model presented for schools was a result of a year-long, multi-disciplinary project in schools. It was chosen as the model used by the Western Center for Drug-Free Schools in 9 western states. In addition, this text was used as a model to obbtain federal grant monies which established a multi-disciplinary drug prevention program for grades K-12 in a community that used to be drug-ridden. This was followed by an award-winning training project for parents and professionals learning together. The next step was to establish a community coalition involving schools, parents, police, businesses, apartment complexes, churches and youth leadership. This coalition is still thriving.

All of the above activities reflect the solid foundation established in the book, "Creating Drug-Free Schools and Communities: A Comprehensive Approach" and put into practice by its authors. Any dedicated community can use this text to guide them in creating a safer environment for families.
