The author examines the pervading atmosphere of the 19th century when arguments became as characteristic of science as they had been of philosophy - arguments between scientists and theologians about evolution, between British and French about chemistry and astronomy, between Germans and British about taxonomy, between scientists, sceptics and even between scientific associations.
