Introduced diseases decimated th Hawaiian population in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but the smallpox epidemic of 1853-54 was the catalyst that led King amehameha IV and Queen mma to establish The Queen's ospital in 1859. Published on he occasion of the 150th anniversary of its founding, this unprecedented book traces the hospital s beginnings in downtown Honolulu, establishment on the dry plain below the hill known as Punchbowl, and evolvement into the modern medical center it is today. The book also includes information on the implementation of Western medical advances in Hawai'i, and the impact of the decimation of the Hawaiian people with regard to immigration from abroad.
