In August of 2001, Chris and Sophie Reed, with their two young daughters in tow, sold everything they owned and left sunny Davis, California for soggy Normandy, France. Chris chronicled the ups and downs of the journey in a series of columns for the Davis Enterprise. What didn't appear in the columns, however, was the collapse of the Reeds' marriage and Chris' downward spiral into a life of drunkenness, assorted debaucheries and dead-end relationships.
