Transition Ahead: Lesson Plans for Life Beyond High School
Description:
Transition Ahead: Lesson Plans for Life Beyond High School was created as a practical, user-friendly tool for those who equip students with transition-related knowledge and personal strategy as they prepare for post-secondary education, employment, and independent living. It was birthed from a qualitative research study that solicited the responses from high school special education practitioners. The topics generated were integrated into lessons that were then field-tested by transition instructors, refined, and further developed. Materials are inclusive of lessons that are relevant for an array of ability levels including those who are college-bound and may or may not have disabilities. It was designed to prompt students to engage in dialogue and develop personal strategies deemed as appropriate for themselves. This is in relation to topics they may encounter requiring them to integrate self-advocacy skills with making informed choices. Each lesson also includes suggested, reviewed, and described websites and online videos. They have been provided to help further clarify, expand upon, and/or provide examples of lesson concepts that are listed within the lessons. An entire section of the book is dedicated to defining transition-related vocabulary and terms emphasized within each lesson. Reproducible worksheets accompany each topic. Lesson content may be used in whole or in part and based upon teacher discretion and needs of the populations being taught. In addition to being a teacher resource, Transition Ahead: Lesson Plans for Life Beyond High School can also serve as a useful tool for counselors, agencies, organizations, and parents, who also play key roles in providing guidance and insight to young people..
