Filling in the Black: one woman's journey of re-education

This book is the story of a journey, over two thousand miles in a little RV on a quest for knowledge and understanding. While the experiences of violence and disenfranchisement against minority peoples weren't hers, Joan needed to know the details of what had brought about the historical continuation of racism since the earliest days of this country. She needed to witness the powerful thread connecting the present to the past, and, most essentially, to un-educate herself 'from a legacy of lies and omissions.' Her quest then was an immersion into re-education. As she explains, the depth and breadth of learning this powerful and often devastating information could not be without immense sadness.Joan's writing is open and honest. She urges all fellow citizens to seek out the truths of black history, both the progress and the pain, to dispel the myths, and to confront the suffering. She acknowledges that this is just a beginning toward the even greater journey of making amends for centuries of black oppression.
