Clare Wakefield is more dismayed than elated when she learns of her husband's escape from Middle Eastern kidnappers. Dismay is to turn to fear, though, when Clare begins to suspect that Edwin has made up the whole kidnapping story for publicity. With the return of his 'fellow hostages', Clare becomes slowly obsessed with the idea that her unstable husband is contemplating murder.
