The subject of this important book is the making of a literary generation - the young English writers of the 30s. Those who came of literary age during that period - Auden, Day Lewis, MacNeice, Spender, Graham Greene, Isherwood, Orwell, Rex Warner, to name a few - were, whether they knew it or now and whether they knew each other or not, very much a group in the sense that they shared an acute awareness of the pressures and problems of their times.
