AMERICAN GOVERNMENT: READINGS AND RESPONSES uses carefully selected readings to illustrate the debates surrounding key issues in American government. The subtitle, READINGS AND RESPONSES, reflects the main difference from other American Government readers: the presence in each chapter of what Bauer calls a Chat Room. Following single readings or clusters of smaller selections, each Chat Room is an edited version of a classroom conversation among students and the author on the issues raised in the reading(s). Because these dialogues promote critical thinking and focus on key themes, they are as integral to the text as the readings themselves.
