The Mosquito fulfilled an incredible number of contrasting roles, from its original concept of high-speed high and low level unarmed bomber, photo-reconnaissance, fighter-bomber, night-fighter, intruder, bomber support, naval strike, anti-shipping, minelayer, pathfinder, high-speed communications aircraft, to the more mundane tasks of weather reconnaissance and target towing. Over 7,00 were built in Britain, Canada, and Australia.Sometimes called "the wooden wonder" for obvious reasons, it was powered by two Rolls-Royce Merlin engines, which made it the fastest twin-engined combat aircraft in service on either side until the arrival of the jet age
