Hilda Rix Nicholas and Elsie Rix's Moroccan Idyll: Art and Orientalism

Artist Hilda Rix Nicholas' Moroccan pictures are justly acclaimed as her finest, but they are not the only legacy of the time she spent in Tangiers in 1912 and 1914. Together with her sister Elsie, she sent numerous postcards and lengthy letters to friends and family. Published for the first time, their letters from Tangiers present a rich evocation of the real experience of travel in North Africa before World War I, and provide fascinating insight into adventurous young women artists and their growing understanding of a place and its culture. Adomed with sketches and drawings, they give vivid descriptions of the people, places, architecture and the costumes of the local inhabitants.
