Two Mountains and a River
Description:
The book reveals the adventures of Tilman and two Swiss mountaineers, who went together to the Gilgit region of the Himalaya with the project of an attack on Rakaposhi (25,550 ft.). Rakaposhi beat them. After defeat, Tilman went on alone to Chinese Turkestan to meet Mr. E.E. Shipton at Sinkiang for an attempt on Muztagh Ata, in the Tibetan plateau. They did not reach the summit, but they did some heavy travelling among strange towns. Finally, Tilman alone took an alternative return route, which included a crossing of the frontier of Afghanistan (for which he had no visa), being arrested as a spy, and handed on from town to town until his final release. 6x9", xii+233 pp., b&w frontispiece, 18 double-sided b&w plates from photographs, and 6 maps (including one fold-out).
