Carrying letters of marque from Queen Anne authorizing him to prey on Spanish ships and territories in the South Seas, Woodes Rogers left Bristol in 1708 commanding two ships, the Duke and Dutchess. More than three years later, the ships came to anchor in the Thames loaded with one of the greatest treasures captured in British history. The journal Rogers published a year later told the story of how the treasure was won.
