Stimulus reduction, also known as sensory deprivation, is a powerful way to elicit changes in a variety of psychological and behavioral processes. The restricted environmental stimulation technique (REST) is a research method that started in the 1950s with great promise and fanfare. The years since have been marked by a variety of criticisms. Some criticisms are valid, some are erroneous, and some are simply ignorant. They have, unfortunately, overshadowed the substantial progress made in this field over the years.
