Designed for a first course in the mechanics of deformable bodies, this classic work emphasizes fundamental principles, using numerous applications to demonstrate and develop logical procedural methods. Instead of deriving various formulas for all types of problems, it stresses the use of free-body diagrams and the equations of equilibrium, together with the geometry of the deformed body and the observed relationship between stress and strain, for the accurate analysis of the force system acting on a body. The previous edition of this book was published in 1978.
