Between survival and suicide

The tragedy of self-inflicted death has always attracted the attention of philosophers and theologians, but the scholarly analysis of suicide has but a short history. Suicide is by no means a simple issue, for it hinges on a variety of psychological, sociological, ethical, and legal problems and no one has so far offered an equivocal and satisfactory answer to all the questions raised by this perplexing phenomenon.
