Description:
This book aims to supplement the information about the care of the newborn infant available in textbooks of midwifery for student midwives, and to introduce the subject to students of health visiting and medicine and junior doctors commencing work in neonatal units. This edition has been extensively reorganized in the hope of reflecting the needs of those caring for all babies in a district hospital setting. It emphasizes major topics, such as hypoglycaemia and respiratory distress syndrome. Greater emphasis has been placed on topics relating to the increasing ethnic minority groups in Britain today, the problem of HIV infection and drug abusing mothers, but the needs of largely healthy neonates, who form the majority, remain the focus of the book. A pharmacopoeia has been added to assist in the safe prescribing of drugs to neonates. A new short chapter on helping the parents aims to prepare the reader to understand the emotional reactions of family members to the birth of a malformed or ill infant, or to the death of a newborn baby.
