His use of tone to portray the main characters reflects their relationships with one another and with those they are aiding. He imbues Simon with the resolve that is the driving force behind the struggle to find the nest of the Kolder. Simon's wife, the witch Jaelithe, is portrayed as strong and resilient, but also quieter and less forceful than Simon.
