Margaret Fuller (1810-1850) was America's first true feminist, the first to confront publicly the conflicts in a woman's life: intellect vs. emotion, woman vs. artist, family vs. career. Transcendentalist, distinguished literary critic, journalist and teacher, she was a friend and colleague of Emerson, Thoreau, Horace Greeley, Carlyle, and Mazzini.She appeared to have sacrificed a private life to her career until, during her explosive "Roman Years," she took an aristocratic lover and bore a child before their marriage.
