Property, Bureaucracy and Culture: Middle Class Formation in Contemporary Britain (International Library of Sociology)

This study discusses the British middle classes in a historical and regional context, explaining their powerful impact on today's Britain. The authors also develop a new theoretical perspective on the middle classes, criticizing fashionable but unhelpful theories of "the service class." Property, Bureaucracy and Culture argues that recent changes in economic restructuring have enabled the professional middle class to consolidate its dominance, while in contrast, the managerial middle class grows more marginal and insecure. Also explored are issues of social and spatial mobility, cultural practices and political mobilization.
